WHOIS Lookup

Look up any domain's registration — its registrar, when it was created, when it expires, its name servers and status codes — straight from the registry.

What is WHOIS?

WHOIS is the public directory of domain registrations. Every registry runs a WHOIS server that answers, over a simple text protocol, who registered a domain, through which registrar, when it was created and when it expires, and which name servers it points to. It's the quickest way to check whether a name is taken and to see a domain's registration health at a glance.

Thin vs. thick registries

Some registries — like .com and .net — are thin: the registry only stores a pointer to the registrar that holds the full record. This tool follows that referral automatically so you see the complete details rather than just a stub. Note that, since GDPR, many registrars redact registrant contact details from public WHOIS.
