What is time to first byte?

Time to first byte (TTFB) measures how long it takes from the moment a request starts until the first byte of the response arrives. It captures everything that happens before the browser can begin rendering: DNS resolution, the TCP connection, the TLS handshake, and the time the server spends generating the response.

A fast TTFB — generally under 200 ms — is a strong signal of a healthy server and a snappy site. A slow one points to DNS, network or back-end bottlenecks. This tool measures from our server, so results reflect raw server performance rather than your own connection.
